manta reef

Divers come to Mozambique from all over the world to dive Manta Reef to see the majestic mantas and swim with the Whale sharks. Manta Reef has an abundance of marine life. A large number of species are routinely encountered: frog fish, the rare Dragon Moray, paper fish and many other uncommon sights.

Manta Reef also has at least 3 different Manta cleaning stations: one on Manta pinnacles, one in the middle section of the reef and one on Manta Canyon.

Famous for its wealth of biodiversity, Manta Reef is rated as a world top 10 dive site. Manta reef is situated 1km from Tataruga Bay estate.

wildlife

The shallow reefs are alive with a stunning variety of reef fish and snorkel safaris are a perfect way to explore this breathtaking wonderland. The deeper waters teem with game fish like tuna, kingfish, cuta and barracuda – a perfect haven for sport fishermen

Manta Reef, one of the world’s top 10 diving sites, is located a kilometer away. The reef boasts 3 manta ray cleaning stations where the mantas (Manta birostri) wait their turn to be serviced. The reef is large and offers a great variety of dives ranging from 18m – 35m .

It is located in the main current and sightings of manta and devil rays are common. Whale sharks, sharks and various pelagic fish are common.

whales

Humpback Whales visit the area from early June to late October. The whales spend the summer months in the Antarctic waters feeding on Crill. They then migrate up the East Coast of Africa to mate and give birth. After a gestation period of 12 months, females give birth to one calf, which is weaned after 11 months.

The breaching and tail slapping behaviour is associated with mating and is often seen from the shore. During the peak season there are hundreds of these whales off the Inhambane Coast. Humpbacks are migratory, spending summers in cooler, high-latitude waters, but mating and calving in tropical and subtropical waters.

Whale Sharks

Whale Sharks are mostly summer visitors with the best time of the year to see them being November to March. They are gentle creatures, non aggressive plankton feeders that can reach up to 12 metres in length. During November to March Praia da Rocha has one of the highest densities of Whale Sharks in the world with up to 20 individuals being spotted during a 2 hour boat journey.

Snorkelling with Whale Sharks is an experience you will never forget. Touching or riding the Whale Sharks is strictly prohibited as a human touch removes a protective mucus from their skin. During the winter months Whale Sharks are still present but numbers are considerably less.

Dolphins

Dolphins can be seen off Praia da Rocha most of the year but June, July and August are peak months. There are numerous species of dolphin in the area the most common being bottlenose, common and humpbacks. Dolphins are often seen in large pods in excess of 100 individuals. Dolphins have been seen riding the waves almost to the shore in front of the site.

community

The community has obtained food from the ocean for centuries - but population numbers are constantly escalating.

To prevent the overfishing of the reefs and plundering of turtle nests, we give the community an alternative by generating income.

We achieve this by:

Stimulating the economy of the area in which the project is situated by enhancing tourism - which is the largest biggest growing income generator in the world.
